There is much to see and do within easy
travelling distance of ‘Stelling’ which is situated on the eastern edge of
the village of Emsworth with its many attractions. It is just a ten minute
walk into the village centre to enjoy the sites of this historic and
picturesque area with its boatyards, light industry, shops, restaurants and
pubs and a five minute walk to
Emsworth Marina. The more adventurous might enjoy one of the many local walks to
the ‘Royal Oak’ situated on
the water’s edge at Langstone, around the Chidham Peninsular or Thorney
Island. There are numerous other walks to the north along the South Downs
Way passing many villages and the Nature Reserve at Kingley Vale.
A short distance to the east lies the village of Bosham with its ancient
church, history and sailing facilities. The nearby Roman Palace at
Fishbourne
www.sussexpast.co.uk is well worth a visit. The nearest cycle
hire is also at Fishbourne on the A259.
The historic church of St. Thomas-a-Becket lies to the west of the village at
Warblington, and there are sandy beaches at Hayling Island.
Further a field, but only a short car, train or bus journey away are the
cities of Portsmouth and Chichester.
Portsmouth offers many attractions such as the naval dockyard and museum,
HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, the Mary Rose Maritime Museum, the new shopping
centre and restaurants at Gunwharf Quays, sailing facilities at Port Solent
and Sunsail base, sandy beaches at Southsea, Hover and car ferry links to
the Isle of Wight and ferries to the Continent. Portchester Castle is also
nearby.
Chichester is 7
miles to the east offering such attractions and facilities as the cathedral,
Festival Theatre
www.cft.org.uk, coarse/sea fishing, golf,
walks along the canal bank and an excellent shopping centre. Nearby are
Fontwell and Goodwood racecourses. There are sandy beaches at Wittering and
Selsey. Chichester Harbour is a haven for wildlife and playground for
yachtsmen/dingy sailors. Watersports, walks and boat tours around the
harbour are available.
